Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania, sometimes referred to as 'trich', is a compulsive behavior characterized by the recurring urge to pull out hair from their scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or the body. Some people with trichotillomania pull enough hair to create bald spots on their heads. Others may be missing eyebrows, eyelashes, or body hair.
Anxiety, depression, trauma, stress and certain medications may amplify the hair pulling episodes. Hair loss from trichotillomania can cause shame as efforts to 'just stop pulling' seem unsuccessful.
Trichotillomania hair loss is often covered up as or camouflaged. Some may cover missing eyelashes by wearing false lashes, applying heavy makeup, or trying a permanent makeup solution. Bald patches may be covered using custom wigs or custom extensions. Read more about custom hairpieces. While no single treatment works for everyone, some individuals have reduced hair pulling through the addition of eyelash extensions applied to the eyelashes that have re-grown, and by wearing hair extensions above the missing patch of hair.
